A 22-year-old man has died after he was attacked by his girlfriend’s dog in Lancashire today.
The unidentified victim was viciously bitten by the canine at a Preston house at around 3.45pm.
Paramedics and police were called to the scene, but the man passed away of his injuries.
The dog was subsequently taken away by handlers and put down by a vet, police said.
Officers have so far not identified the breed of the animal. At first it was thought that the dog was owned by the victim himself, but police later said they thought it belonged to his girlfriend.
DI Jane Webb, from Preston CID, described the New Year’s Day incident as ‘tragic’.
‘As yet we are not able to reveal the identity of the man who has died, nor can we say at this stage what sort of dog it was. That will have to be investigated by specialist officers.
‘We got the call from an ambulance crew who were at the house and said they were dealing with a serious dog bite. Obviously with a dangerous dog they wanted our assistance to deal with it.’
This evening, family and friends were taking to social media to pay tribute to the victim.
One neighbour wrote: ‘He was a lovely person. Heartbreaking.’
Further details of the attack in Dundonald Street remain unclear.
